Monday Meditation: Is Our Image of the Divine Simply a Projection of Our Ego/Needs?
If there is a God, atheism must seem to Him as less of an insult than religion. –Goncourt
Sometimes, especially during times of crisis or even an inflated sense of purpose or ego, we make the divine in our own image. We transform the divine into what Harry Emerson Fosdick called “a cosmic bell-boy,” or simply a reflection of our personal projection on the world. In this way, are some of our beliefs in the divine actually distorting reality? Can our egos and projections truly create a divine figure that becomes self-serving rather than an ideal to live up to?
Today, I will search for truth and have the courage to accept reality in spite of personal belief. I will not allow my ideals to lord over the truth of the divine.
